FC Volendam remain rooted to the foot of the Eredivisie standings following a goalless stalemate at home to FC Utrecht.
With De Graafschap having posted a surprise 2-0 win over Heerenveen on Friday night and fellow strugglers Roda JC managing a similar result against ADO Den Haag earlier today, Volendam knew anything less than three points would see them finish the weekend rock bottom.
But they could not find the breakthrough that would have lifted them above De Graafschap on goal difference, and instead find themselves two points adrift.
The first real chance fell to the eighth-placed visitors after 20 minutes, with Francis Dickoh heading just wide from Tom Caluwe's free-kick.
Dickoh looked to turn provider for Morten Skoubo three minutes later but his shot from just outside the penalty area came to nothing.
The home side mustered their first opportunity of the afternoon on the stroke of half-time, Aaron Meijers forcing Utrecht goalkeeper Michel Vorm to tip around the post for a corner from Mathieu Boots' cross.
Simon Cziommer was introduced in place of Skoubo for the visitors midway through the second half, and his free-kick 16 minutes from time caused panic in the home box.
Volendam managed to clear the ball initially, but it rebounded off Loic Loval and goalkeeper Jeroen Verhoeven was alert to the danger.
Verhoeven was again called into action five minutes later, producing a brilliant stop to deny Sander Keller from Barry Maguire's pass.
Volendam substitute Furdjel Narsingh - an 84th-minute replacement for Kelvin Maynard - almost had the desired impact with two minutes remaining when he went on a fantastic run and looked to feed a ball through but the pass eluded the frontmen and drifted out for a goal-kick.
