FC Volendam gave their hopes of avoiding relegation a timely boost with a narrow victory over Vitesse Arnhem today.
Jack Tuijp headed in the only goal of the game in the 33rd minute to give Volendam their first win in five games.
They remain rock-bottom, but are now only three points behind Roda JC who occupy the relegation play-off spot.
Vitesse knew victory would leave them three points clear of their target for avoiding relegation and they almost got off to the perfect start as Domingues Claudemir sent a shot fizzing past the left post in the fourth minute.
Tuijp had a great chance for the hosts in the 23rd minute as Paul de Lange sent him through one on one with the Vitesse goalkeeper but Eloy Room did well to save with his foot.
Vitesse's Lasse Nilsson found himself in a similar situation at the other end on the half-hour mark and was also denied by goalkeeper Jeroen Verhoeven.
Volendam took the lead three minutes later as, following some good play with Dominique van Dijk, Gerry Koning crossed the ball into the area for Tuijp to head home.
Koning also played a crucial part at the other end shortly before half-time as his last-ditch clearance helped Verhoeven keep out Nilsson's powerful shot.
The 29-year-old could have doubled his side's lead two minutes after the interval but saw his powerful 25-yard screamer blocked by Room.
Tim Bakens had an even better opportunity in the 53rd minute when his close-range header was cleared off the line by a Vitesse defender.
Melvin Platje was also guilty of wasting a golden chance as he blazed over from eight yards in the 79th minute.
Vitesse could have snatched an equaliser three minutes from time as a Volendam defender headed Nicky Hofs cross only as far as but his effort sailed over the bar.
