STRASBOURG, May 10 (Ligue 1) - Strasbourg became the second side to be relegated from Ligue 1 after falling to a heavy defeat at home to Caen on Saturday.
Only a win would have saved the hosts from the drop, but that soon looked unlikely as Julien Toudic fired Caen ahead after six minutes before Manuel dos Santos put through his own net five minutes later.
Kevin Gameiro pulled one back for Strasbourg after 23 minutes, but Yoan Gouffran added to their misery prior to half-time before Toudic added a fourth six minutes from time.
The game got off to a flying start for Caen when after just six minutes Gouffran released Benjamin Nivet on the right, and his cross was turned in by Toudic with an emphatic bicycle kick.
Before they had a chance to respond, Strasbourg found themselves two goals down and facing a mountain to climb when a fierce free-kick from Eric Mouloungui was pushed away by keeper Benoit Costil, but the ball rebounded back of Dos Santos' chest and into the goal.
But the hosts were not prepared to go down without a fight, and when Alvaro Santos fought to keep possession on the right he was able to release James Fanchone, whose ball into the box found an unmarked Gameiro at the far post to smash home a header.
However, the fans' hopes of a comeback were crushed on the half-hour mark when Nivet beat the hapless Dos Santos to play the ball into the box for Gouffran, who was left with a simple tap in at the near post.
Strasbourg still fought and came close to a second when Gameiro brought a great save from Benoit Costil just after the break.
Then Dos Santos nearly made amends for his earlier mishaps with a shot onto the post with 17 minutes left.
But in the 84th minute Toudic confirmed the inevitable when he received a poorly-cleared free-kick in the box and applied a simple finish.
