METZ, April 12 (Ligue 1) - Metz were relegated from Ligue 1 after Marseille came from behind to boost their push for a Champions League spot.
Cedric Barbosa gave the home side the perfect start after three minutes but Marseille equalised soon after through Djibril Cisse before Samir Nasri sealed the points in the second half.
The win moved Marseille above Nancy into third place, while Metz's fate was finally sealed after weeks at the bottom of Ligue 1.
Metz knew they had to win to give themselves any faint hope of survival and Barbosa slotted home from Babacar Gueye's pass to give them the perfect start.
However, Marseille were level 11 minutes later when Laurent Bonnart's pass found Kanga Akale on the penalty spot and he laid the ball off to Cisse who finished well.
The goal rocked Metz already-fragile confidence and minutes later goalkeeper Christophe Marichez missed his kick and the ball fell to Mamadou Niang whose shot from the angle hit the bar.
The visitors continued to dominate and in the 57th minute they went ahead when Boudewijn Zenden found Nasri on the edge of the area and his powerful shot went in off the bar.
Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda produced a good save to deny Miralem Pjanic, before Nasri's header was superbly clawed out from under the bar by Marichez.
Metz pressed for the equaliser and in injury-time Barbosa connected with a free-kick at the far post but Mandanda reacted well to just prevent the ball crossing the line.
