SOCHAUX, May 3 (Ligue 1) - Sochaux failed to get the win that would have guaranteed their place in Ligue 1 next season after drawing a blank against already-demoted Metz.
However, Les Lionceaux will still be confident of securing survival as they remain five points clear of the relegation zone with two games remaining.
Both sides had chances to take the lead, with the ball being cleared off both goallines in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
Metz were first up to try their luck after four minutes when Sochaux stopper Teddy Richert dropped Rudy Gestede's shot at the feet of Miralem Pjanic, but the young Bosnian had his effort headed away by Bojan Jokic.
Sochaux responded three minutes later when from a corner Fabrice Pancrate powered through the crowded area to meet the ball, but he saw his shot stopped on the line by goalkeeper Christophe Marichez.
After the bright start the tempo soon subsided, as Sochaux were forced into shots from range with both Damien Perquis and Stephane Dalmat testing Marichez from outside the area before the break.
Having drifted out of the game in the first half Metz came out much the better side in the second period.
Pjanic again was the demoted side's main threat, as he forced Richert to tip a shot on to his own bar after 47 minutes, then sent a shot inches high two minutes later.
Immediately after Kandia Traore missed the chance of the game to win it for the hosts when Mickael Isabey found him alone in front of the goal, but the Ivory Coast man somehow managed to miss the target.
