RENNES, April 26 (Ligue 1) - Strasbourg's dismal run of form continued with defeat at Rennes.
Jean-Marc Furlan's side have now lost eight games on the bounce and they were never in contention in Brittany as Mickael Pagis' brace against his old club and Fabien Lemoine's strike ended the game as a contest before half-time.
And while Rennes continue to hunt for a place in Europe next season, Strasbourg remain second from bottom and three points adrift of safety with only three games left for them to revive their fortunes.
The hosts could have gone ahead after half an hour when Strasbourg keeper Stephane Cassard had to reach at full stretch to keep out Sylvain Marveaux's long-range shot.
Three minutes later the deadlock was broken, Romain Danze picking out Pagis with an inch-perfect cross from the right which the striker volleyed against defender Mamadou Bah before pouncing on the rebound.
Jerome Leroy's 35th-minute corner was played short to Lemoine, who manoeuvred room for a shot and blasted a 20-yard effort in off the underside of the crossbar.
In first-half stoppage time Pagis added further to the woes of his former club. A neat one-two with Stephane Mbia put Pagis through and he volleyed his shot over Cassard.
Three minutes after the break Pagis released Marveaux and Cassard did well to keep out his angled attempt.
Rennes continued to mount pressure on Strasbourg's vulnerable defence and 14 minutes from time Jimmy Briand burst down the right before picking out Bruno Cheyrou only for the former Liverpool man to see his effort cleared off the line.
