Canada 4-0 Ghana: Sinclair tallies twice
HANGZHOU, China -- Christine Sinclair scored twice to help
Canada stay alive for a quarterfinal berth with a 4-0 win Saturday
in the Women's World Cup.
Canada's fate will depend on the result of its last Group C game
against Australia on Wednesday. Sophie Schmidt and Martina Franko
also scored.
Ghana (0-2) was eliminated from the second round.
Canada (1-1) took the lead in the 16th minute. Kara Lang's cross
from the right side to the far post found Sinclair, whose looping
header got past Ghana goalkeeper Memunatu Sulemana.
Canada made it 2-0 in the 55th minute. A corner kick from the
left side was headed off the line but went to Schmidt. Her header
on goal went in off the head of a Ghana defender.
Canada made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute when Sulemana rushed off
her line to try to steal the ball from Lang, but she skipped clear
and sent the ball to Sinclair, who knocked it into the empty net.
The fourth goal came on a goalkeeping error in the 77th minute
when Sulemana failed to handle a corner and Franko sent in the
loose ball.
