SEVILLE, May 19 (Primera Liga) - Gimnastic Tarragona's last hopes of staying in the Primera Liga look to have faded after they were held by Real Betis on Saturday.
Both goals came in stoppage time with Javier Portillo opening the scoring for Nastic from the penalty spot.
However, Xisco Munoz equalised for the Andalusians, who had been reduced to 10 men by the sending-off of Johann Vogel for two yellow cards in quick succession.
Nastic, whose coach Paco Flores has already said he will quit at the end of the season, have failed to acclimatise since winning promotion and their fate now hangs by a thread.
With three games to play, they were nine points adrift of safety at the final whistle with Athletic Bilbao due to play a match with Real Zaragoza later where victory for the Basques would seal Gimnastic's fate.
The point brings Betis closer to sealing their top-flight status although it is not yet mathematically certain.
Betis started well with Jesus Capi forcing a save from Ruben Chueca while their Brazilian playmaker Marcos Assuncao fired just wide.
Dead ball specialist Assuncao had another chance from a free-kick but Chueca dealt with it safely.
The overworked custodian was in action again after nine minutes as he successfully fielded a long-range effort from Capi.
Alejandro Campano finally threatened for Nastic when his effort was saved by Pedro Contreras and the same player went close again when he fired over the bar.
Nastic were running into form and a Campano corner found the head of Portillo who could only head wide from close range.
But Capi and Assuncao were both not far off with long-range efforts for Betis with the game still goalless at the interval.
After the break David Generolo forced a save from Contreras while at the other end Betis player Edu fired over.
Assuncao's curled free-kick was palmed away by Chueca and the custodian distinguished himself again with another save from Edu.
Edu was looking dangerous and a header from close range forced Chueca into action again but Nastic still looked capable of grabbing the opener.
Ariza Makukula headed wide from close range and then Ismael Irurzun fired wide for the Catalan club.
Portillo's shot was saved by Contreras but at the other end Xisco was foiled by Chueca.
As the game drifted into stoppage time. Nastic got their chance as Robert De Pinho fouled Makukula.
A penalty was awarded and Portillo netted from the spot.
Betis immediately launched a counter raid and grabbed themselves an equaliser.
Isidoro Gomez crossed towards Juanito Gutierrez and his header set up Xisco, who headed his side level.
It was a cruel blow to Nastic who might even have lost the match had Nano found the goal rather than the hands of Chueca.
Their fate is now a question of when rather than if, and all calculations could be rendered unnecessary by the end of Saturday night.
