LA CORUNA, October 1 (Primera Liga) - Deportivo La Coruna scored twice in the last 10 minutes to move up to sixth place, three points off the Primera Liga lead, with victory over Real Sociedad.
As the game looked to be destined for a draw, young defender Antonio Barragan broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute and Ivan Riki then made sure of the points with a second three minutes from time.
Chances were few and far between for much of the first half, and after Deportivo`s Joan Capdevila and Sociedad`s Alexandre Fabio Felicio had missed free-kicks at either end, the best chance of the half fell to Javier Arizmendi with 19 minutes on the clock.
However, the Deportivo striker missed the target from only six yards out to give Sociedad a massive let off.
The game then began to open up in the final five minutes before half-time.
First Darko Kovacevic got up to head Felicio`s cross goalwards, but he was denied by Dudu Aouate.
Moments later, Riki got a sight of goal from 12 yards out but his shot was saved by Asier Riesgo.
Riki had another chance when he met Barragan`s cross with a drilled left-footed shot but he blazed it over the bar.
Two minutes into first-half injury time, Arizmendi met Sergio Gonzalez`s free-kick with a header, but sent it wide of the left-hand post.
The second half started in a similar vein with the sides trading chances at either end.
Arizmendi`s drilled shot was straight at Riesgo in the 46th minute, and seconds later, Aouate was called on to keep out Xabi Prieto`s header.
Antonio Juan Rodriguez then tried his luck from range but his 25-yarder did not have enough power to beat Riesgo.
Deportivo had the ball in the back of the net in the 55th minute but Arizmendi`s effort did not count as the striker had strayed offside.
The hosts were given another chance in the 68th minute when Garcia Gerardo brought down Riki outside the area. Riki took the free-kick himself and his cross found Sebastian Taborda, but the substitute sent his header narrowly wide.
At the other end, Felicio hit a long-range effort that sailed wide of Aouate`s goal.
The visitors had a better chance to snatch the lead in the 78th minute when Gerardo`s free-kick found Prieto inside the area, but his drilled shot was saved by Aouate.
Having survived that, Deportivo were soon ahead.
The first goal came when Argentinian defender Fabricio Coloccini got forward to cross and Barragan, a summer signing from Liverpool, sent his left-footed shot into the top left-hand corner of the goal, well out of reach of Riesgo.
Sociedad were still rocking from that when Riki doubled the count with a delightful curled shot into the top corner of the goal from the right-side of the area.
As the game moved into injury time, Sociedad launched a late attempt to salvage something from the game, with Mikel Alonso sending a long-range effort over the bar before Inigo Diaz de Cerio missed the target from 20 yards.
