LILLE, May 9 (Ligue 1) - Sedan's relegation from Ligue 1 was confirmed on Wednesday night following their defeat at mid-table Lille.
The Ardennes club beat Lorient on Saturday to maintain their faint hopes of staying up but the loss at Lille and fourth-bottom Nice's victory over Paris St Germain condemned Jose Pasqualetti's side to second tier football next season.
They got off to a good start at the Stade Metropole when Gregory Pujol put them in front but Michel Bastos equalised from the penalty spot and Abdulkader Keita grabbed the winner just before the interval.
The visitors' early enterprise was rewarded in the 12th minute when Pujol dispatched Nicolas Marin's right-wing cross past home keeper Tony Sylva.
Lille have suffered a major slump since going out of the Champions League two months ago, losing six of their last seven games.
And with the home fans starting to get agitated, Claude Puel's men needed a lift.
Fortunately for Puel it came in the 28th minute when Yoann Lachor was adjudged to have fouled Keita inside the area.
Referee Lionel Jaffredo pointed to the spot and Bastos slotted home despite Patrick Regnault getting a hand to the ball.
Lille could have gone ahead after 39 minutes but Keita headed wide when he was well placed.
The Ivory Coast international made amends four minutes later, however, when he volleyed Bastos' free-kick home at the far post.
Only a fantastic save by Sylva denied Sedan an equaliser after 59 minutes.
The visitors launched a swift counter attack which culminated in Marin firing in a shot which the Lille keeper did superbly well to deflect wide.
Nadir Belhadj was certainly doing his utmost to drag Sedan level.
After setting up Marin's chance he then shot straight at Sylva after a mazy dribble which took him past five Lille players.
But Sedan could not find a second goal and they will play in Ligue 2 next season.
