Botswana win 6-5 on penalties

Botswana 0-0 S Africa: Bafana Bafana lose on penalties

GABORONE, May 21 (Reuters) - Botswana upset South Africa with a penalty shootout victory to book a place in the final four of the Cosafa Castle Cup in Gaborone on Sunday.

Goalkeeper Modiri Marumo saved from South Africa defender

Siboniso Gaxa to ensure a 6-5 triumph in their Group B final

after the match had ended 0-0.

It is the first time that Botswana have reached the final

four of the annual southern African championship.

Marumo proved the hero for his country with key saves in the

game as Botswana stacked their defence and kept an inexperienced

South Africa side at bay.

South Africa were denied an early lead when striker Alton

Meiring struck the upright with a curling free kick.

The defeat for South Africa continues a dismal run of form

in the competition for the top ranked nation in the region. They

have only won the trophy once in its 10-year existence.

Botswana join Angola and holders Zimbabwe in the semi-final

in August. The last place in the final four will be determined

in July when Namibia host the Group C tournament at which

Malawi, the Seychelles and Zambia will also compete.
