Romania 2-0 Slovenia: Romania march top
TIMISOARA, Romania, June 6 (Reuters) - Adrian Mutu's header and a Cosmin Contra volley gave Romania a 2-0 win over Slovenia in a Euro 2008 qualifier to go two points clear at the top of Group G on Wednesday.
Romania have 17 points, two more than Bulgaria, who beat
Belarus 2-1, after seven games. The Netherlands, who have a
match in hand, are third on 14 points.
Mutu headed home from a Cristian Chivu right cross five
minutes from the break after Dorin Goian's header had hit the
crossbar in the 30th minute.
Slovenia forward Andrej Komac missed a chance when he had
only keeper Bogdan Lobont to beat early in the second half and
Contra killed of the visitors' last hopes for a draw with a
perfect 25-metre volley after a corner from the left.
Romania were more dominant than in their 2-1 win over the
same opponents in Celje on Saturday and Slovenia's goalkeeper
Samir Handanovic denied the home side at least four more goals
while Ciprian Marica hit his crossbar.
'My guys played this match perfectly to accomplish the task
in hand -- to get all six points against Slovenia,' Romania
coach Victor Piturca said.
