Malta 0-1 Greece: Malta pay the penalty
TA' QALI, Malta, March 28 (Reuters) - A second-half penalty
by captain Angelo Basinas earned Greece a 1-0 win in Malta in
their Euro 2008 Group C qualifier on Wednesday.
The European champions piled the pressure on Malta from the
outset but had to wait until the 66th minute to break down the
stern resistance put up by the hosts.
Greece were given a penalty after Malta's Roderick Briffa
was deemed to have tripped Vassilis Torosidis in the box. The
Maltese defender was sent off for his second yellow card.
Basinas coolly converted the penalty to steady Greece's
nerves and drag their qualifying campaign back on track
following their 4-1 defeat by Turkey on Saturday.
