Southport 1-1 Woking
Kevin Leadbetter came within inches of giving Southport a passage into the
second round of the FA Cup as they drew 1-1 against Woking.
His injury-time effort came back off the Woking crossbar seconds after referee
Robert Lewis had been striving to keep order as players and coaching staff
became involved in a confrontation when Jerome Fitzgerald tackled Justin
Richards into the barrier.
Leadbetter beat Luke Oliver to force a save from Shwan Jalal in the ninth
minute and Dominic Morley had a 25-yard shot that just cleared the crossbar.
Carl Baker tried a similar effort on the half-hour after Jalal lost the ball
outside his area while Matty McGinn and Baker tried their luck from distance as
the visiting defence looked uncertain.
But it all changed after 32 minutes as Steve Ferguson broke on the right and
beat two defenders to cross into the path of Karl Murray. He was challenged by
Steve Dickinson only for Steve Evans to steam in at the far post and lash the
ball into the net.
Woking failed to add to their tally and Southport were back in the game after
64 minutes when Baker cleverly controlled a pass and quickly punted the ball
into the area where Leadbetter took advantage of Jalal's hesitation to slide it
over the line.
