Bury's bubble was well and truly burst as a 6-1 hiding at Halifax sent them crashing out of the LDV Vans Trophy.
Goalkeeper Craig Dootson was sent off 15 minutes into his first start for the Shakers as Halifax ran riot in the first round.
Craig Midgley opened the scoring from the spot after Dootson was dismissed for felling Lewis Killeen and Darren Mansaram celebrated his return from a loan spell at Tamworth with near-identical headers to put the hosts 3-0 up.
Bury, who paid a high price for making seven changes from the side that beat Darlington at the weekend, pulled one back when Jake Sedgemore unleashed a brilliant 25-yard volley past Shaymen debutant Lee Butler.
But Steven Haslam smashed in an effort from even further out, Killeen slotted home a fifth and Andy Parrish put through his own net to condemn Chris Casper to his first defeat in full charge of Bury.
