A late strike by Craig Westcarr earned Cambridge a 2-2 draw at Southport.
The Sandgrounders made the perfect start when they scored almost straight from the kick-off when Kevin Leadbetter crossed for Carl Baker to net from close range.
Their lead lasted less than five minutes however, when Fola Onibuje headed home a Courtney Pitt cross for his fourth goal in three games.
Scott Howie kept Cambridge level when he tipped round a 20-yard effort from Steve Daly but after that the early excitement settled down with few chances for either side for the remainder of the half.
Baker got his and Southport's second four minutes into the second half when he volleyed home from the middle of the box.
And Southport should have put the game out of reach for Cambridge when they won a penalty in the 55th minute. Baker stepped up to complete his hat-trick but his shot was pushed away by Scott Howie.
And Southport were to rue the penalty miss with seven minutes remaining when Westcarr fired home for Cambridge to rescue a point.
