John Grant came off the bench to deny Conference leaders Grays a fourth straight win as Halifax grabbed a 1-1 draw on their first visit to the Recreation Ground.
Lee Matthews marked his first start in six weeks with his first goal for Athletic but Grant produced the ideal response to being left out by boss Chris Wilder, netting for the third straight game.
A dull first half was brought to life when Jamie Slabber fed Matthews for the opener, but Grant bagged his fifth of the season when he headed home Matthew Doughty's cross.
Halifax had other chances to snatch all three points and end Grays' unbeaten start to the season, but it was Grant who had the best of them all when he put his shot wide from six yards.
The striker was almost made to pay the ultimate price when Slabber struck a post and substitute Michael Kightly missed another golden opportunity in stoppage time.
