Three goals in the opening 25 minutes for Southport proved enough to secure all three points and condemn Forest Green Rovers to a 3-1 defeat.
In the ninth minute Kevin Leadbetter played the ball to Carl Baker who, 30 yards from goal, drilled a left-footed effort beyond Ryan Clarke. And less than a minute later, Baker grabbed his and Southport's second when he volleyed home Matty McGinn's cross.
But, Rovers came back superbly and in the 15th minute a cross by Jon Beswetherick was converted by Jon Richardson.
Southport pressed forward looking to restore their two-goal advantage and one duly came in the 24th minute.
After Steve Daly had seen his header blocked by Zema Abbey, the defender was not to be denied a second time when Leadbetter again provided the assist for Daly to drill home from the edge of the box.
The second half was never going to live up to the goal flurry seen in the first and Bruno Teixeira's 49th minute effort that was saved by Steven Dickinson's feet was the closest Forest came to reducing the deficit.
