TRIPOLI, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Libya qualified for their first appearance at the African Nations Cup finals in more than two decades but their celebrations were tempered by a disappointing 0-0 home draw with Sudan in Tripoli on Friday.
Sudan goalkeeper Abdallah El Muez made several fine saves in the Group Three match, which served as a qualifier for both the 2006 World Cup finals and Nations Cup tournament in Egypt.
Libya, who were last at the Nations Cup finals in 1982, made sure of a top four finish in the group. They cannot now be caught by the bottom two teams, Sudan and Benin.
In the African zone World Cup qualifying groups, the winners go through to the 2006 finals in Germany and the top three also qualify for the Nations Cup tournament in Egypt in January.
Group Three, however, is an exception because it includes Nations Cup hosts Egypt, who are in third place, with the top four qualifying.
