ZWOLLE, March 20 (Eredivisie) - Zwolle coach Hennie Spijkerman pledged to throw caution to the wind in their crucial clash with fellow strugglers Volendam and the move paid impressive dividends on Saturday.
Zwolle started the match four points adrift of second-bottom Volendam knowing anything other than victory could spell relegation come the end of the season.
But the cellar-dwellers responded in emphatic fashion, taking a 2-0 half-time lead through Bert Zuurman and Dominggus Lim-Duan before adding gloss to the win with a second-half strike from Ivar Van Dinteren.
The result means Zwolle have now lost just one of their last five matches and with their next game coming against 15th-placed ADO Den Haag things could get even better.
A sell-out crowd of 6,800 packed the Oosterenk Stadion for this match and the majority of those fans were given the ideal start when Zuurman put Zwolle ahead after only four minutes.
Lim-Duan created the goal with a deep cross from the right which found Zuurman at the far post and he stooped to head Zwolle into the lead from five yards out.
Volendam mounted an immediate riposte with a stinging 20-yard shot from Gijs Luirink that flashed just wide of Johan van der Werff's goal.
The visitors really should have drawn level in the 42nd minute, however, when Misha Salden missed a great chance.
He got on the end of Eddy Putter's cross but, from eight yards out, could only direct his header straight into the arms of Van der Werff.
That proved to be a costly miss as within 60 seconds Zwolle had grabbed their second goal.
Marco Roelofsen made a good break down the wing before sending a cross into a crowded Volendam box that eventually landed at the feet of Lim-Duan.
An unmarked Lim-Duan was able to turn the ball home from eight yards out to double Zwolle's lead.
The game was wrapped up in the 61st minute when Zwolle established a 3-0 lead.
Robert-Jan Ravensbergen played a ball in behind the Volendam defence and with the visitors' offside appeals falling on deaf ears, Van Dinteren was able to sprint through and slot the ball to left of Verhoeven for the final goal of the game.
