KERKRADE, March 6 (Eredivisie) - Roda JC's hopes of claiming a UEFA Cup place at the end of the season suffered a blow on Saturday after they were held at home by bottom-club FC Zwolle.
It took a while for Roda to breakthrough the second-leakiest defence in the division but when debutant Iwan Redan put them ahead in the 53rd minute a victory looked the only logical outcome.
But Zwolle, who had won just two games and earned only 12 points in the matches leading up to this one, were behind for just 11 minutes before Ivar van Dinteren equalised.
Neither side was able to go on and force a winner and seventh-placed Roda, who next week face runaway leaders Ajax, will consider this two points dropped.
Roda had the better of the early opportunities with Sergio twice going close.
His first effort, a header after 16 minutes, was well-saved by Zwolle goalkeeper Johan van der Werff, who pushed the ball over the bar.
The second opening came 15 minutes later but Sergio's snapshot from 20 yards out sailed wide of the target.
Zwolle's reply was instantaneous and Jasar Takak can count himself unlucky not to have given his side the lead.
Finding himself with time and space 16 yards out, Takak fired in a shot that Roda keeper Vladan Kujovic did well to push around the post.
That was as good as it got in a largely forgettable first half but it was a completely different story at the start of the second with two goals in the first 20 minutes.
Redan, making his first appearance for Roda, had only been on the pitch eight minutes after replacing Sven Vandenbroeck when he made himself an instant hit with his new fans.
A loose ball in the area was challenged for by Redan and Van der Werff which resulted in the ball squirming away from the Zwolle custodian.
Sergio should really have tucked away the loose ball but when his shot rebounded back off the post, Redan was on hand to fire into an unguarded net.
Zwolle did not have to wait long for the equaliser, though, with Van Dinteren having the easiest of tap-ins to make it 1-1.
Morten Karlsson and Takaka combined to set up Van Dinteren with a shooting opportunity from just a few yards out and he wasn't about to waste the opening.
Roda had one good chance to claim all three points late on but substitute Edrissa Sonko saw his shot turned away by Van der Werff and they had to settle for just the point.
