Manchester City defender Kolo Toure stressed the importance of the 3-1 victory at Newcastle following the derby defeat against rivals Manchester United last weekend.
"It was really important to react after the loss against United,'' he told Sky Sports 2. "For us it was about coming here to get three points. It's not easy to come here and play against Newcastle. We showed great character - we were really strong.''
Kolo's brother Yaya - who scored City's vital third goal - said: "We needed a result today. I think we deserved to win because we played well.''
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said: "It was a soft second goal (to concede). But we looked like we had got goals in us, unfortunately we look like we'll concede goals.
"I was happy with a lot of things we did. We opened them up on a lot of occasions. But they are a good side. Their best players played well today. I was proud of my players in the second half. We came out with intent.''
