Thompson missing for Shrimpers

Southend manager Phil Brown will be without defender Adam Thompson when the Shrimpers host Dagenham in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The on-loan Watford man has been called up to Northern Ireland's Under-21s squad and will miss both this fixture and his side's trip to Burton on Saturday.

This game looks to have come too soon for midfielder Marc Laird, who has missed the last seven matches with a hamstring injury.

Midfielder Conor Clifford is expected to keep his place in the side after scoring his first goal for the club in the 2-0 victory over Oxford.

Dagenham boss Wayne Burnett could hand a first start to striker Chris Dickson.

The former Charlton forward came off the bench in the closing stages of Friday's 2-1 win over Accrington and is in contention to come into the starting XI on Tuesday.

Defender Ian Gayle returned to the squad on Friday following a spell on the sidelines and could play some part against the Shrimpers.

Burnett will check on forward duo Josh Scott and Louis Dennis, who are close to making full recoveries from their respective injuries.
