Jones may start for Vale

Daniel Jones is expected to make his first-team return for Port Vale when Rochdale visit Vale Park in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Jones' month-long absence with a groin strain ended on Saturday when he was included in the matchday squad for the 1-1 home draw with Bristol City. The left-back, who featured for the reserves last week, did not get on against the Robins but should feature, and may even start against Dale.

Veteran striker Lee Hughes staked his claim for a recall with a last-minute equaliser from the bench at the weekend.

Louis Dodds, Jennison Myrie-Williams, Sam Johnson, Kaid Mohamed and Richard Duffy are others who will also be hoping for some match time.

Rochdale striker Scott Hogan is expected to overcome a knock in time.

Hogan, who has scored five goals in 11 appearances this season, sustained a minor injury in Saturday's defeat at Portsmouth, but will be in contention.

Manager Keith Hill, who has no other new injury or suspension worries, said he will not be making many changes to his starting line-up for the second-round tie, but midfield pair Bastien Hery and Peter Vincenti, plus striker Graham Cummins - all second-half substitutes at the weekend - are pushing for starts.

Dale will be without skipper Peter Cavanagh (Achilles) again and striker George Donnelly sits out the last game of his three-match ban.
