Stade Rennes v AC Ajaccio: Preview

Rennes manager Philippe Montanier is placing an emphasis on defensive solidity as he looks to build on a promising start to the Ligue 1 campaign.

Montanier's men lie fifth after five games, conceding just four goals and keeping clean sheets in draws with Lille and Lyon.

The 48-year-old insists that statistic is no accident and is instead part of a policy to build from a strong base.

``Yes, it is very important to feel secure,'' he said.

``We know that the top five of the championship are generally the five best defences too. There is a correlation.

``These two games are encouraging, especially as we changed several players, but the efficiency is maintained.

``Sylvain Armand shines behind and brings his experience and qualities to the game. It improves the players around him.''

Although satisfied with his players' efforts so far, Montanier is not getting carried away and believes the team have work still to do.

``Of course it is better to be in this position than the opposite,'' he added. ``What is interesting is that a team under construction and yet still we manage to scrounge points.''

Ajaccio have yet to win this term, with three draws and two defeats to date.

Fabrizio Ravanelli's side have been better on the road, settling for a 1-1 draw at title contenders Paris St Germain when Edinson Cavani salvaged his side a point four minutes time.

A goalless draw at Sochaux followed but Ravanelli will be hopeful on ending his wait for a maiden victory since taking charge in June.

For Rennes, the match represents the second installment of three matches in nine days, but Montanier is confident his side are in currently in good condition.

``It will change the pace of training, this week will be different in terms of recovery because over the course of these games we will need everyone.

``There may be fatigue or injury but the main thing is that everyone is ready.''
