St Etienne v Lorient: Preview

Lorient defender Maxime Baca expects a tough return to action on Sunday against St Etienne as Ligue 1 resumes following the international break.

Lorient lie on the edges of the relegation zone while St Etienne are on the fringes of the European qualification cut-off and Baca expects a tough game but is also looking forward to facing former team-mate Benjamin Corgnet who made the move to St Etienne in the summer.

``We know that we have recently had problems away from home so we want to quickly stop this bad run and start moving forward because we know that we need points,'' Baca told the Lorient website.

``It is a game which will be difficult against a great team.''

Baca added: ``I think they will fight for a place in Europe. In our situation, no matter who we are required to meet , at home or away , we need to get good results from the next five matches. And it begins Sunday at Geoffroy Guichard.''

Baca said of the reunion with Corgnet: ``It's always special to play against a former team-mate. It will be a pleasure to see him. I hope Lorient emerge victorious from this battle.''

Despite Lorient's poor start to the season Baca is looking for things to improve.

``I would like to start our season better, with more points on the board. We have the skills and the means to do much better. Now it has to be translated on to the pitch.''

Lorient coach Christian Gourcuff named a 19-man squad to face St Etienne but will be without the injured Julien Quercia, Alain Traore, Raffadine Abdullah, Maxime Barthelne and Sadio Diallo, and suspended duo Lamine Gassama and Larry Azouni.

St Etienne coach Christophe Galtier has welcomed Loic Perrin and Brandao back to training and expects them both to feature against Lorient.

Galtier told reporters: ``They will play against Lorient. These are two important elements in the group.''

Galtier is also looking for improvements from his players and used the international break to discuss their form, both with individuals and the team as a whole.

``Our performance over the last four games is inadequate. We must quickly rectify this. Our commitment must be total from the start of the match ''
