Bastia v Montpellier: Preview

PA Sport

New Montpellier coach Rolland Courbis is determined to arrest the club's alarming slump.

The 2012 champions head to Bastia this weekend just five points above the Ligue 1 relegation zone after a run of nine games without a win.

Courbis returned to the club for a second spell earlier this month and saw his side beaten in his first game in charge by St Etienne last week.

Courbis, manager from 2007-09, was a popular appointment, but he knows he must turn the club's fortunes around quickly.

The 60-year-old told reporters: ``Today we are in 17th place.

``The club must first stop its descent before hoping to get back up, then we can prepare for next season.

``We will take each day as it comes.''

Courbis was clearly not impressed with the performance in the home loss to St Etienne.

He said: ``We will try to do as many things as possible in the minimum time.

``I do not claim to have miracle solutions but I know how a football team works.

``We must improve our confidence. When the ball is at the feet of my players it seems to burn them, even the most experienced.

``This is one of the problems to solve. I see players playing at not even 50 per cent of their value.

``We will try to get their heads up, I am still positive. I saw good will and fighting and the desire to do well.''

They travel to the Stade Armand Cesari on Saturday evening to face a Bastia side who are also looking to get back to winning ways after three games without a victory.

Last week's 2-1 loss at Lille left the Blues 13th in the table, a fortnight after they had been well placed in eighth.

To compound matters, Frederic Hantz's men were also beaten in the League Cup in midweek by Evian.

Hantz said: ``We must restore energy to go again against Montpellier on Saturday. We have to continue to work.''
