Borussia Monchengladbach v Mainz: Preview

Tiredness should not be an issue for Borussia Monchengladbach when they face Mainz in the Bundesliga tomorrow, despite a trip to Turkey in midweek.

Not even a delayed return to Germany yesterday due to snow should cause coach Lucien Favre any serious problems, given that he fielded a largely reserve team at Fenerbahce and still came away with a 3-0 victory.

Indeed, that victory will probably lift confidence, even if the players who made the trip to Turkey on Thursday were unable to train on their return, and it is bound to boost competition for places too.

``The coach made many changes to the team but we still played well, and this shows that we have many talented players in the squad,'' said Luuk de Jong, one of the few first-team regulars who played on Thursday night, scoring on his comeback from injury.

``I am delighted that I did not feel pain in my knee, and to score a goal makes it even better.''

He will have to wait until kick-off to find out who he is up against tomorrow, with Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel still undecided about who his first-choice goalkeeper is.

Loris Karius made an impressive debut in place of the suspended Christian Wetklo last weekend, but the experienced Heinz Muller is now available to deputise.

``They'll discover on the bus to the stadium who will play,'' said Tuchel. ``It's all about making a decision for the good of the team.

``It is not necessary to draw up a hierarchy in public.''

Whoever does stand between the posts, Tuchel has a warning for him to be alert whenever Juan Arango gets the ball, even if he is 30 yards from goal.

``His set pieces or distance shots can decide an even game,'' he said. ``We need to be highly alert.''

Both clubs are within a pack of nine all pushing for a place in Europe next season, which is why a tight game can be expected at the Borussia Park Stadion.
