VfB Stuttgart v Hamburg SV: Preview

Stuttgart turn their attentions back to the Bundesliga after suffering a 2-0 defeat in their Europa League last-16 first-leg clash against Lazio on Thursday.

They host Hamburg tomorrow ahead of a trip to Rome on Thursday which is likely to signal the end of their European travels for this season.

If they are to have any more excursions next season, it will now depend on their final league placing or progress in the DFB-Pokal.

``We have won our last three games against Hamburg and we want the fourth now to follow,'' said coach Bruno Labbadia.

He hopes his side will have learned something from Thursday night's defeat and refused to see just the negatives from the result.

``We had more of the possession, more passes which reached their man, but Lazio just showed how experienced they are,'' he added at a press conference.

``That is something we have still got to achieve, which is why games like this do us good, even if the result was wrong this time.''

The performance of Alexandru Maxim was one of the biggest positives to emerge from the game, although he did not last the whole 90 minutes after breaking his nose and being concussed in a challenge with Hernanes.

He is therefore unavailable this weekend.

``His fresh wind did us good,'' said Labbadia. ``And that is why his absence (tomorrow) is very annoying.''

Hamburg may also be without one of their key performers, with captain Heiko Westermann suffering from a calf injury.

``He has bruising right on the muscle and nerves and that is causing him problems,'' said coach Thorsten Fink.

``He is a big doubt, otherwise Jeffrey Bruma and Slobodan Rajkovic will play in the centre of our defence.''

Fink is keen to bring an end to his side's bad run against Stuttgart and celebrate his first victory over the Swabians.

``We are not going there just to get a point,'' he said.
