St Etienne v Bastia: Preview

Coach Christophe Galtier believes victory over Bastia tomorrow would cap a perfect January for St Etienne.

ASSE have got their season back on track in the new year highlighted by booking a first-ever Stade De France final in the Coupe de la Ligue a fortnight ago.

A first league win in two months followed at Brest last weekend before a midweek Coupe de France success, albeit on penalties, over 10-man amateurs Meaux.

``It will not be easy (against Bastia). If we are lucky enough to win, we will have achieved a nearly perfect month of January,'' Galtier told a press conference on Friday.

The only negative for Galtier's side has been their recent goalscoring record.

St Etienne have managed just a single goal in those past three games and their inability to break down the 10 men of Meaux underlined their problems.

``We have lacked precision, aggression and sharp movements in the past few games,'' Galtier said.

``We realise that we can not pass up so many opportunities. We need to show much more effectiveness in front of goal.

``Against Meaux we were not troubled but we had to wait until penalties which is a lottery.

``What I can say is though we have produced a lot of goalscoring chances in the past three games.''

Galtier could not have asked for a better opponent than Bastia to try and rectify his team's scoring problems - the Corsicans have conceded a league-worst 44 goals this season - although they have brought in former France goalkeeper Mickael Landreau this month.

``Recruiting him has reinforced them defensively,'' Galtier said. ``They score a lot of goals as well. It will be a tough match.''

St Etienne remain without Faouzi Ghoulam and Max Gradel to African Nations Cup duty while Andreas Laudrup (calf) and Loic Perrin are doubtful.

Bastia are six points clear of danger and will be without Wahbi Khazri and Sambou Yatabare due to the African Nations Cup.
