Valenciennes v Bastia: Preview

Valenciennes coach Daniel Sanchez is targeting an end to a five-game winless run in Ligue 1 when his side take on Bastia tomorrow.

VA last tasted victory against Brest in early February and have since moved ever closer to the congested lower half of the table after only picking up three points in their last five games.

They are still eight points from safety and will face a Bastia side more in danger than themselves, but Sanchez knows a win would almost guarantee his side a place in the top flight for next season.

``If we beat Bastia, there will be a big step towards safety, it will almost be good enough,'' Sanchez told va-fc.com.

``This is an important and decisive match. It is better to play Bastia at this time of the season rather than the end of the championship.

``We will not allow them space and tighten up to prevent them feeding the attackers. This is a key to this game, at least on the defensive side. On the offensive side, we have to play.

``To get a win, you have quality in your game. Everybody wants to finish the championship well, and achieve the best place possible.''

Bastia manager Frederic Hantz will be without striker Wahbi Khazri, who picked up an injury while on international duty with Tunisia, and attacking midfielder Florian Thauvin, who has fatigue after he played and scored twice for France Under-20 against Romania.

``These are things that happen to Khazri (injury),'' Hantz told sc-bastia.net, ``But I'm more disappointed because Thauvin called to say he was tired.

``I thought he could be in the squad tomorrow. It's a shame because it will not be a friendly game tomorrow against Valenciennes.

``It's frustrating to deliver players fit and for them to come back tired or injured.''
