Spurs were excellent, Inter Milan diabolical. A 3-0 victory effectively leaves Inter needing snookers in the San Siro next week - but will the absence of Gareth Bale through suspension make a key difference?

And the referee blows the final whistle, Spurs win 3-0.

Gallas with a rare foray forward, squared to Holtby on the D but his shot deflects straight to Handanovic who collects at the second attempt.

Bale almost flicks and tricks his way through into the box but it runs out. "Bale, Bale" the Spurs fans still sing.

Pereira penalised for a foul on Lennon, looked a soft one.

Inter starting to improve now, what a difference an away goal could make in this tie.

A clever free-kick from Cambiasso puts Palacio through on goal and Friedel has to make a good save - though he shouldn't have been given the chance. Spurs escape.

Guarin caught by Livermore and this time it is a free-kick.

Guarin tries to go past Gallas and tumbles to the ground - the ref dishes out another booking for diving.

Brilliant run from Lennon, skipping into the box after picking up a fine pass from Parker. But Handanovic speads himself superbly to block Lennon's shot.

And Spurs can break with Defoe. He has options left and right if he can pick right one this could be four ... Defoe delays the pass and is tackled.

Inter take the corner short and Guarin is robbed. Awful.

Cambiasso takes and Vertonghen flicks it behind for a corner. In truth it was a woeful delivery and could have been left.

Defoe with a clumsy challenge on Chivu and this could be lumped into the box.

Mousa Dembele gets a rest, Jake Livermore on in his place.

The corner comes in again from Bale and this time Chivu does clear his lines.

Parker moves forward and feeds in Defoe, who shifts the ball quickly and fires in a shot - Handanovic does well to get down low and push it behind.

Bale bursts through the middle but can only fire into the sidenetting. The Spurs fans expected a goal.

Inter still giving the ball away cheaply and don't look like creating anything. They surely need an away goal to have a real chance.

Lennon is penalised for a foul on Pereira.

Another free-kick from Bale on the right, this time much further out and he can only find the goalkeeper.

The invisible Kovacic is replaced by Fredy Guarin, who would normally prove far more dangerous. He was doubtful for this game with a knock.

Inter rocking again.

Awful defending, Bale with the corner on the right and Chivu completly loses Vertonghen which leaves the Belgian with a free header to make it 3-0.

GOAL - JAN VERTONGHEN

Defoe does well to win a corner, Ranocchia playing the cross behind with his stomach.

Pereira comes forward this time with Lennon struggling to track. He manages to get a shot off from the edge of the area but drags it well, well wide.

Opta stat: Spurs have only lost one of their last 78 European games after scoring 2+ goals, but that defeat came v Inter in 2010 (3-4).

Pereira is furious after being penalised for a tug on Bale just outside the box on the right.

Lennon pulls back a cross for Sigurdsson but this time the Icelandic star cannot control first time.

Interestingly Rodrigo came on at half-time at Catania at the weekend with Inter two goals down. They won 3-2 with Rodrigo getting two of them.

A change for Inter at the break as Rodrigo Palacio comes on for Juan to play up front with Cassano. Pereira will drop to left-back.

A superb first half performance from Spurs and they deserve to be two up - but Inter showed signs that they could cause problems in the second period.

And there goes the half-time whistle.

The corner comes in from the right and yet again it's Vertonghen there to head to safety,

Another shot from Alvarez cutting in from the right, it deflects off Vertonghen and behind for the corner.

Awful miss from Ricardo Alvarez! Played through by Cassano and he was in on Friedel - but dragged his shot horribly wide of the far post. He had to score.

Bale takes from the right and it's a looper for Vertonghen at the far post - he heads it back across and Handanovic catches.

Vertonghen plays a fine ball down the line for Defoe, Ranocchia has to be smart to track the striker and win the challenge

And there's a shot from Sigurdsson which is easy for Handanovic to collect.

Inter have been very, very poor and have offered very little in the opposition's half.

Another chance for Spurs as Sigurdsson finds Bale in the air once more, this time Bale cannot direct his header towards goal.

Inter have managed to keep Spurs at bay more effectively since the second goal.

Sigurdsson and Pereira clash shins with the Spurs man coming off worse - he'll be okay to continue.

Dembele tries to escape Gargano with a run through the middle but is tugged back. Free-kick, taken short.

The corner comes in, Ranocchia has the header but it's way off target.

With Bale out of the second leg, Spurs will want to get a healthy lead here tonight.

We've just checked and Bale was indeed booked against NK Maribor and Panithinaikos so will miss the second leg back at Inter.

Lennon crosses low for Defoe, who spins superbly to shoot only to see his effort parried by Handanovic - but he can only push the ball back out to Sigurdsson who neatly puts the chance away.

Good play from Inter, Kovacic leaning back and firing over the bar from the edge of the box.

Bale tried to skip through past Gargano and went down under the challenge. There was barely a touch and the ref probably got that right.

Bale shoots from almost 30 yards but this time it's a comfortable claim for Handanovic.

Gareth Bale has now netted 11 goals in his last nine games for club and country.

Inter, wearing their all-red away kit, haven't really been at the races.

Opta stat: No Italian side has ever won at White Hart Lane in Europe (excl qualifiers) with two defeats and two draws for the visitors.

This is just the start Spurs needed against an Inter side who have won only three of their last 11 Serie A fixtures.

Bale does well and works a pass to Defoe, who cuts back inside to create space before blasting a shot straight at Handanovic.

Great work by Gylfi Sigurdsson, losing his man to swing in a cross with his left. And there was that man Bale who rises highest above Cambiasso to head into the corner of the net.

It's the biggest game of the round in the Europa League as Spurs entertain Inter Milan.
