San Marino champions Tre Penne want to sign Antonio Cassano

San Marino champions Tre Penne are going to try to sign Sampdoria veteran Antonio Cassano for their Champions League qualifying campaign.

The club, who will commence their Champions League journey with the first preliminary round on June 28, have until June 17 to reinforce their squad, following in the footsteps of La Fiorita who last year signed Damiano Tommasi for their Europa League qualifying campaign.

The aim is to add an injection of experience to teams mostly composed of amateurs and a few former professional players.

Tre Penne's sporting director Maurizio Di Giuli spoke of his dream of leading them into the group stage.

"For us, just being there [at the qualifying stage] is already a victory," he said. "But seeing as this is Leicester's year, we are allowed to dream, even though it's an almost impossible one.

"So, we are looking for functional players who are still playing, either in [Italian third-tier] LegaPro or even in [fourth-tier] Serie D -- we don't want too many former players, a la Tommasi, as it would then become more of a marketing ploy. But whoever makes himself available to us will be more than welcome."

Following a rumour linking Tre Penne to former Udinese star Antonio Di Natale, Di Giuli denied having actively contacted specific players yet, but admitted to a few dreams: "As a Juventus fan I would say Alessandro Del Piero. Cassano would be ideal: I don't think he is going to come to us, but we will try."
