Few really knew Zinedine Zidane as a coach when he was named Real Madrid boss back in January, but the past five months have painted a clearer picture. Having inherited a disillusioned squad, the Frenchman has used tactful man-management and sensible tactical tweaks to return Madrid to the Carlo Ancelotti years of internal harmony and entertaining football. There has been no need for a revolution. Instead, the chief factors behind the midseason revival have been a more expansive game plan and, above all, a greater sense of freedom given to players.
