Short on keepers after Wayne Shaw's exit, Sutton win with defender in goal

Sutton United were forced to field an outfield player in goal after goalkeeper Ross Worner went off injured during their National League game at Torquay on Saturday.

Usually, Wayne Shaw would have been on hand to deputise between the sticks, but the 45-year-old resigned earlier in the week after the Football Association and Gambling Commission launched an investigation into a potential breach of betting rules after he ate a pie on the bench during the FA Cup tie against Arsenal.

Simon Downer, a 35-year-old central defender, took over from Worner following his substitution shortly after conceding a 14th-minute goal, since Sutton had no goalkeeper on the bench.

Despite being a goal down and without a keeper, it proved to be no obstacle for Sutton. They equalised before Torquay's Brett Williams finally beat the stand-in keeper to give his side a 2-1 lead moments after half-time.

But Sutton scored twice after the break to remarkably win the game 3-2.
