Sunderland in talks with David Moyes to replace Sam Allardyce - sources

Sunderland have held talks with former Manchester United boss David Moyes about replacing England-bound Sam Allardyce as the club's new manager, sources have told ESPN FC.

Allardyce's appointment as England manager is expected to be confirmed by the end of the week with the former Newcastle and West Ham manager the preferred choice of the Football Association to succeed Roy Hodgson.

Sunderland are angry that the FA's approach for Allardyce comes just weeks before the start of the new Premier League season, but have wasted no time in trying to find a replacement and have already made contact with Moyes and his representatives,

A number of names, including Burnley's Sean Dyche, have been linked with the Sunderland job but sources have told ESPN FC that Sunderland chairman Ellis Short has set his sights on Moyes and is hoping to appoint the Scotsman as early as this weekend.

Any deal should be relatively straightforward as they will not have to agree compensation with another club because the former Everton boss has been out of work since November 2015 when he was fired by Real Sociedad.

And sources have told ESPN FC that the 53-year-old is very keen to get back into management.
