Rennes' Christan Gourcuff ready for 'challenge' of working with Yoann

Rennes manager Christian Gourcuff has admitted that the prospect of coaching his son Yoann next season is challenging.

Gourcuff, 61, was appointed to his new role earlier this month after stepping down as coach of the Algerian national team.

His son Yoann, 29, returned to his first club in November and went on to score twice in 12 league games for Rennes.

The younger Gourcuff has not yet agreed to stay on next season but Rennes president Rene Ruello suggested that he is likely to do so having put an injury-hit five years at Lyon behind him.

The midfielder has had some fitness problems at Rennes as well, however, and his father knows that getting the best out of his son could be one of his biggest tasks next season.

"I'm not against it," Christian Gourcuff said of working with Yoann. "We know the dangers of such a situation. We're ready to take them on.

"I didn't join Rennes to coach Yoann but it's a challenge -- next year if he re-signs -- to put him in the best possible conditions.

"The problem with Yoann is to rediscover a physical wellbeing or a physical level that might help him to perform well.

"He obviously has to accumulate a certain amount of game and training time. I think that Rennes have managed Yoann very well."
