Spanish FA candidate Jorge Perez wants single-leg Spanish Supercopa

The 11 p.m. kickoff of the Supercopa second leg between Barcelona and Sevilla is one part of the questionable administration that Spanish FA presidential candidate Jorge Perez aims to change.

The dates for the traditional curtain raiser to the La Liga season were only confirmed last week, and on Monday the times were announced, with last year's Copa finalists Sevilla hosting double champions Barca at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan in the first leg at 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14.

The return leg at the Camp Nou will be played on Wednesday Aug. 17, and must kick off after that night's Champions League playoff games are finished, so it will not finish until well into the early hours of Thursday morning.

Such bizarre scheduling, which does not take into account the situations of travelling fans or young supporters, is not uncommon in Spanish football.

Speaking to AS, Perez said that were he to replace long-serving Angel Maria Villar as Spanish FA president, he would be in favour of changing the Supercopa format.

"I would like just one game, with it played in a neutral venue," Perez said.

Another unique aspect of the Spanish season is the annual debate over the Copa del Rey final, with the date and venue for the game usually only decided late in the season after much public and private debate and lobbying.

"I would be in favour of it always being played in Madrid," Perez said. "There would be two stadiums - either [Atletico Madrid's future ground] La Peineta or [Real Madrid's Estadio] Bernabeu. It should always be decided before the competition begins. It has become an insufferable farce each year."

Perez is a former close ally of Villar's at the Spanish FA (RFEF), who has received the backing of La Liga president Javier Tebas to challenge the Basque in an election which had been scheduled for earlier in the year but has now been put back to October or November.

At last Friday's RFEF assembly, Villar, 66, suggested he may try for the UEFA presidency, but he stopped short of actually revealing anything about his future plans. Should he move up to Europe's top job, it is thought he favours current players union (AFE) chief Luis Rubiales as his domestic successor.

Amid the uncertainty there has been no progress on a replacement for outgoing Spain coach Vicente del Bosque, who resigned after a last-16 exit to Italy at Euro 2016.

It had been thought that Villar would appoint ex-Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla and Levante coach Joaquin Caparros, but the issue did not come up at last week's assembly of delegates and Del Bosque could well now continue in a caretaker capacity into the autumn.

Perez, who is thought to favour appointing former Spain under-21 and Porto manager Julen Lopetegui to the position, said that not having a permanent national team coach in place is a problem, especially as Spain have a World Cup 2018 Group G opener at home to Liechtenstein in September and then travel to Italy and Albania for key qualifiers the following month.

"It is a problem, in September there are important games," he said.
