Steven Davis: Southampton can cope without manager Ronald Koeman

Southampton midfielder Steven Davis has said he is disappointed that manager Ronald Koeman has left for Everton but confident that the Saints can cope.

Davis, 31, was a mainstay for Southampton during Koeman's two years in charge, helping the club finish in sixth place last season.

Former Netherlands defender Koeman, 53, departed for Goodison Park earlier this week, and Northern Ireland captain Davis told ESPN FC: "I obviously thoroughly enjoyed working under him and I'm disappointed to see him go.

"But I think the club is well equipped to deal with the situation.

"There was a similar situation a couple of years ago when Mauricio Pochettino left for Tottenham."

Davis said he believed Southampton were "in a great position" after qualifying for European competition and amassing a best-ever Premier League points tally.

"There's a lot to look forward to in the new season," he added.

"Unfortunately Ronald won't be the manager but the club, I'm sure, will make a very good appointment."

Davis starred for Northern Ireland in their 2-0 Euro 2016 win over Ukraine on Thursday and, speaking after that match, said he had developed as a player thanks to Koeman.

"I think you're always learning in football, and if you're not you might as well give up," he said.

"Koeman was obviously a great player himself, a very good coach and a manager that all the boys enjoyed working under."
