Sundowns face tough schedule for League glory

Four impressive League wins in a row have catapulted Mamelodi Sundowns into a prime position to go on and win the Premier Soccer League title, but they must get through nine games in the next 30 days if they are to do so.

They will play seven in the league, and also begin the defence of their CAF Champions League title with two group games before the conclusion of the season.

It is a difficult ask, even for a club with a sizeable squad as is the case at Sundowns.

The Brazilians sit two points behind leaders Cape Town City, but have two games in hand. They will catch up one on Friday night when they play away against Golden Arrows, who only last month knocked Sundowns out of the Nedbank Cup in Pretoria.

Sundowns' May 1 meeting with Bidvest Wits was long held out to be a potential title decider, and it could yet prove a decisive match, even if more now a match that could knock Wits out of the title race.

Sundowns will effectively be playing twice a week after that as they are at home to Platinum Stars (May 4), play away at Orlando Pirates (May 7), and host Baroka on May 10. That game is then followed by their first match in the group phase of the Champions League, where Sundowns are looking to successfully defend their title.

Sundowns' penultimate league match is at home to Maritzburg United on May 17, after which they head back into Champions League action.

They will then conclude the PSL season away at Highlands Park in Tembisa in a match where their opponents might be desperately needing victory to stay up.

Injuries to Wayne Arendse, Tiyani Mabunda and Sibusiso Vilakazi have hardly had any negative impact on the club in recent weeks with Denis Onyango and Khama Billiat returning.

But the taxing nature of the programme and its physical demands mean that Sundowns are sitting on powder keg of potential injury and/or suspension. Some poor luck in the next weeks and suddenly their hopes could all unravel.
