Cape Town City continue their dream run in the PSL

Judas Moseamedi scored an injury-time winner as unfancied Cape Town City kept up their unlikely charge for the South African Absa Premiership title with a 3-2 victory over fellow hopefuls Kaizer Chiefs at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday night.

A pulsating fixture was settled at the death as City stay two points ahead of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, though they have played two games more.

Sundowns kept up their good form with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Ajax Cape Town, and remain favourites to retain their championship. Goals from Bafana Bafana stars Percy Tau and Themba Zwane sealed their win over the Urban Warriors, who held out until the 67th minute until their defence was finally breached with a neat chip from Tau.

The City win is a hammer-blow for Chiefs, who are now four points behind the leaders with the same number of games played. BidVest Wits, surprise 1-0 losers to SuperSport United, are in third, also four points behind City, though they, like Sundowns, have two games in hand. Wits host Sundowns in Johannesburg on Monday in what has the potential to be a season-defining game for them.

City and Chiefs served up some rich entertainment with the home side taking the lead three times in Cape Town.

Aubrey Ngoma gave them the advantage on 16 minutes, before AmaKhosi veteran Siphiwe Tshabalala equalised with a masterful chip over home goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters.

City were back in front just before halftime though as their 'captain fantastic', Lebogang Manyama, netted a 12th league goal of the campaign with a superb strike to move level with Tendai Ndoro from Orlando Pirates at the top of the scorers charts.

Winger Joseph Molangoane had a tap-in to level the score for Chiefs with 20 minutes remaining after the Venezuelen Gustavo Paez had rounded Walters to put it on a plate for him.

City's Lehlohonolo Majoro then missed a superb chance against his former side when he shot over from six-yards, but his replacement Moseamedi spared his blushes with a late, late winner. Thuso Phala scored the only goal of the game as SuperSport, without ill coach Stuart Baxter on the sidelines, stunned hosts Wits.

Jeremy Brockie missed a golden chance to make it 2-0 in the second half of a game that at times lacked the quality you would expect from two talented squads.

At the other end of the table, Bloemfontein Celtic missed the opportunity to take a major step to safety when they drew 1-1 with fellow strugglers Highlands Park and remain just two points clear of the relegation play-off position that is occupied by their opponents.

Musa Nayatama put them ahead just before the hour-mark, but Mothobi Mvala equalised in the fourth minute of injury-time to grab what could be a crucial point for second-bottom Highlands.

Polokwane City cemented their place in the top-eight with a 3-1 home win over Nedbank Cup semifinalists Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Veteran Jabu Maluleke grabbed a brace and youngster Vusi Mngomezulu the third, while a Musa Bilankulu penalty for the visitors proved a consolation.

Just behind them in seventh are Maritzburg United, who continued their fine form with a 3-2 win at Chippa United.

Mohau Mokate, Kurt Lentjies (penalty) and the Belgian Andrea Fileccia were on target for the visitors, while Phetolo Sekome and Zaphaniah Mbokoma netted for Chippa, who stay in relegation trouble just two points above Highlands.

There are two more fixtures to be played on Wednesday as strugglers Platinum Stars and Free State Stars clash in Phokeng, and Orlando Pirates host bottom side Baroka FC as they look to push for a top eight place this season.
