Real Madrid's Paul Clement plays down Gareth Bale-David De Gea swap

Carlo Ancelotti's assistant coach Paul Clement says that Gareth Bale is settled at Real Madrid amid speculation of a potential summer swap deal involving Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea.

Bale, 25, joined Real for 85 million pounds in the summer of 2013, and scored vital goals in both the Copa del Rey and Champions League finals to ensure a successful debut campaign at the Bernabeu.

The Wales international has been criticised at times this season by the Spanish press and Bernabeu crowd for his play, with Cristiano Ronaldo defending the winger this month from criticism after Bale failed to set up the Ballon d'Or against Espanyol.

Real have been linked with a summer move for Old Trafford No.1 De Gea, with United boss Louis van Gaal saying "everything is possible in the world of football" -- but Clement insists the forward is settled at the Primera Division leaders.

"I'm not sure [where the speculation comes from]," he told the London Evening Standard. "I have a really good relationship with Gareth here. We're communicating every day.

"He seems very settled here to me. In no conversation has he ever said 'I'm really unhappy and I'm thinking about going back' -- not at all. He has signed a long contract here at the club. I know the club see him and some other young players that they have bought as the future to drive this club forward over the next four or five years."

Regarding De Gea, Clement added: "Real Madrid are always going to be linked with some of the best players and also some of the best emerging young talents. My understanding at the moment is that the club and manager [are] very happy with squad of players -- we haven't got a big squad. But it is a squad packed with quality and there are no current plans for ins and outs."

Current Bernabeu No.1 Iker Casillas said earlier in January he would be open to a move to MLS, though Clement thinks the Madrid legend could carry on at the club for years to come providing he stays fit.

"I don't think Iker Casillas is old," he added. "If you look after yourself, goalkeepers can play close to their 40s. Iker has been here a long time and he's a legend for the club due to what he has achieved and also for the national team as well so I think that would be up to Iker himself, whether he wants a fresh challenge.

"He is doing very well and we also have a fantastic keeper in Keylor Navas so we think we are really strong in that position."
