RB Leipzig hopeful on Timo Werner despite Real Madrid talk

RB Leipzig are confident they will keep Germany international Timo Werner beyond next summer despite speculation linking him with Real Madrid.

Werner, 21, has scored 25 goals in 36 competitive matches for the Bundesliga club since joining from Stuttgart in 2016.

The striker, who has drawn comparisons with Germany legend Miroslav Klose, has scored six goals in only eight games for his country and Spanish newspaper AS again suggested on Tuesday that Madrid could make a move for him after the 2018 World Cup.

Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, though, said he is confident Werner will remain at the Red Bull Arena.

"We play in the Champions League," he said on Sky on Monday. "We offer Timo the chance to make the next step. We are totally relaxed."

Last season, Werner scored 21 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches, more than any other German player in the league, and he has scored four goals in four competitive matches for RB in the current campaign.

He is under contract at Leipzig until 2020 and reportedly has no release clause in his current deal.

Germany international Mario Gomez said last week that Werner "will dominate the Germany attack over the next 10 years."
