Real Sociedad boss hopes Barcelona target Inigo Martinez will stay

Real Sociedad coach Eusebio Sacristan hopes defender Inigo Martinez, linked with Barcelona, will stay at the club.

Centre-back Martinez helped Sociedad finish sixth in La Liga and qualify for the Europa League, with his performances attracting an approach from Barca.

The 26-year-old is reported to have agreed a five-year contract.

But Eusebio told Marca: "For us, he is a very important player, extraordinary, and of a level that we all know. It's very good that we have him with us.

"There have been a lot of rumors regarding our players. In a way this is good and normal that, following a good season, clubs are monitoring our players who have a high level."

Martinez, who has made 222 appearances since making his first-team debut in 2011, is under contract until June 2021 and has a €32 million buyout clause.

Club president Jokin Aperribay recently said he would rather keep him than have €32m in the bank, but Eusebio said: "We are vulnerable to the more powerful clubs when they decide, at some point, to come and get our players.

"Thankfully only Yuri [Berchiche, who has joined Paris Saint-Germain) has left the club. I hope we can count on the rest once the transfer window closes."
