Liverpool can thrive even if Philippe Coutinho joins Barcelona - John Barnes

Liverpool legend John Barnes has told ESPN FC his former club can thrive even if star playmaker Philippe Coutinho leaves.

Coutinho has been increasingly linked with a move to Barcelona, with recent reports in Spain saying he had agreed personal terms with the Liga club.

But former England winger Barnes said: "It's not happened yet. Of course he may have agreed terms, but they have got to agree a transfer fee.

"I think it would be great if Liverpool keep him, but if he goes I wish him all the best.

"Liverpool will continue because Jurgen Klopp has got a good squad. He will maximise the potential of the squad without Coutinho.

"We'd like him to stay, but if he goes Jurgen Klopp will find a way to stay competitive."

Barnes also backed Klopp to get the best from summer signing Mohamed Salah, who spent two difficult years at Chelsea.

"The Klopp factor is incredible at Liverpool, whereby the fans support him no matter what he does," he said. "If we don't make another signing, they'll be happy.

"Salah didn't do well at Chelsea, and if he went to another Premier League club, the fans might be disappointed to be signing a Chelsea 'reject.'

"But because Klopp has signed him, the fans love him. And if the fans love you, you can perform, which he has done in the first three [friendly] games, so he'll have a big impact on Liverpool."
