Fiorentina sign midfielder Jordan Veretout from Aston Villa

Fiorentina have completed the signing of Jordan Veretout from Aston Villa after he decided against a permanent switch to St Etienne.

Veretout, 24, has joined the Viola for an undisclosed fee, reported to be in the region of €7 million and signed a four-year contract.

"It's a great day for me," he told the Serie A club's website. "I'm ready to give my best for Fiorentina. My position is in the centre of the midfield and I like to entertain people. I know Carlos Sanchez here and I'm delighted to link up with him again."

Veretout made 25 Premier League appearances for Villa in 2015-16 before joining St Etienne on loan a year ago. He featured 35 times for them in Ligue 1 last season and scored three goals.

St Etienne had been keen to make Veretout's deal permanent, but sporting director Dominique Rocheteau said: "We know him well as a man and a footballer, but frankly we were surprised and disappointed by his conduct.

"He didn't respect the word he had given us and the agreement we had with him. His arrival had all been organised, but he then told us he wanted to go to Fiorentina.

"His choice is a sporting one. Now we've discovered that we weren't his first choice."

His arrival in Florence comes a day after they sold Federico Bernardeschi to Juventus and he becomes their sixth new signing this summer, after Vitor Hugo, Nikola Milenkovic, Bruno Gaspar, Rafik Zekhnini and Petko Hristov.

Carlos Sanchez, who was initially loaned to Fiorentina from Villa, completed a permanent move to the Serie A club earlier this summer.
