Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma signs new deal, joins Stoke City on loan

Stoke City have signed Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma on a season-long loan deal.

Zouma, 22, has also signed a new six-year contract with Chelsea.

The centre-back struggled to re-establish himself in the first team at Stamford Bridge last season after returning from a serious knee injury in January, making just 13 appearances.

He does not feature in Antonio Conte's immediate plans despite the departures of John Terry and Nathan Ake.

Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo told the club's official website: "It is fantastic that Kurt has chosen to commit his future to Chelsea.

"He has shown his talent since joining us three years ago, and has returned from a serious injury with a fantastic attitude.

"Now he has the opportunity to play regularly in the Premier League and we will be monitoring his progress closely at Stoke."

Stoke saw off competition from West Brom to sign Zouma, who is hoping a full season of Premier League action can help him convince Conte of his quality and earn him a place in France's World Cup squad.

Chelsea paid St Etienne around £12 million to sign Zouma in January 2014, when they allowed him to remain in France for the remainder of that season.

He made more than 50 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions before rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a Premier League match against Manchester United in February 2016.
