Cologne call off Anthony Modeste's Tianjin Quanjian move

Cologne striker Anthony Modeste's €35 million transfer to Chinese Super League club Tianjin Quanjian has collapsed after his current club ended discussions.

Following an outstanding season for Cologne with 25 goals in the Bundesliga, Modeste had been expected to seal a move to Tianjin Quanjian.

Last week, Jorg Schmadtke, the club's sporting director, confirmed that negotiations had reached their final stages, with the transfer fee widely reported to be at €35 million.

On Wednesday, though, a brief statement on Cologne's official website said the Bundesliga club "have terminated discussions with Tianjin Quanjian regarding the transfer of Anthony Modeste."

It added that the transfer collapsed "after the parties involved were not able to reach an agreement."

On Friday, talks between the clubs had reportedly stalled over a dispute between Cologne and the player's agents, who wanted to cash in on the transfer and reportedly demanded €6m from the German side.

Despite being warned against doing so, Modeste then not only boarded the plane to China but also was reported to have completed his medical at Tianjin Quanjian.

The French attacker remains under contract with Cologne until June 2021.

Also on Wednesday, German weekly Sport Bild reported that Borussia Dortmund attacker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is moving closer to a move to Tianjin Quanjian, who have reportedly offered the Gabon striker an annual salary of €30m and are willing to pay around €80m for last season's Bundesliga top scorer.
