Everton in talks over £30m deal for Sunderland's Jordan Pickford - sources

Everton are closing in on the signing of Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in a deal worth up to £30 million, sources close to the Black Cats have told ESPN FC.

Sources have told ESPN FC that the two clubs are in advanced talks over a deal for the 23-year-old, who excelled for Sunderland despite their relegation from the Premier League last season.

Everton had an initial offer for Pickford rejected last month, but the two clubs have remained in talks and a breakthrough has been made on the fee. Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain has been in charge of negotiations for his club.

Pickford is currently away with England at the European Under-21 Championship in Poland and is expected to tie up his move to Goodison Park upon his return from international duty, when he will undergo a medical.

Sources told ESPN FC in April that Everton were lining up a move for Pickford, with Ronald Koeman looking to bring in a new No. 1 goalkeeper this summer.

Maarten Stekelenburg has failed to nail down the No. 1 spot at Goodison Park since his arrival last summer from Fulham, while Joel Robles has struggled to convince he is the answer to Everton's goalkeeping problems.

ESPN FC's senior writer, Mark Ogden, contributed to this report.
