Chelsea defender Nathan Ake to hold talks over Stamford Bridge future

LONDON -- Nathan Ake will hold talks about his Chelsea future with technical director Michael Emenalo and head coach Antonio Conte, he has told the Guardian.

Ake spent much of the second half of the season on the bench after being recalled from a loan spell at Bournemouth in January to provide defensive cover.

The 22-year-old made five appearances in all competitions for the Blues, who are reportedly targeting significant defensive reinforcements this summer.

Ake's fellow academy prospect Andreas Christensen is poised to return from a two-year loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, meaning his first-team chances are likely to remain limited.

"When I was 17, 18, 19, you are happy that you are going to be involved, or be on the bench, or get some minutes," he said.

"But I think at my age you want to play a little bit more, also because I had a taste of it.

"Of course you also know that this is a big club so there will be big players, and it's not easy to come into the team. I just need to see what is going to happen with Michael [Emenalo] or the manager. We have to talk and see what is best."

Ake said "the main thing" was playing time, adding that it remained to be seen whether that came at Chelsea or elsewhere.

Although he has struggled for playing time under Conte, the Netherlands international said: "I really like him.

"He called me in the office straight away on the first day [after recalling him from Bournemouth], explaining how we play, where he sees me, which is more left-side centre-half, but in the centre if needed and sometimes as a left-wing back.

"I think the first two weeks I still needed to adjust, but after then you know everything you need to do because we're so well drilled."
